Main card predictions
Thiago Alves vs Martin Kampmann WW
This fight is almost gauranteed to be a barn burner and would most likely be my pick for fight of the night if it the card wasnt stacked with the new flyweight divsion. both of these guys come to fight and always entertain the crowd. Kampmann has been kind of treading waters as far as rankings goes recently but some of that can be attributed to a controversial decision loss to deigo sanchez and former strikforce champ Jake Shields. he has very good stand up striking with 7 tkos but generally uses range and precision to accumulate damage throughout the fight(maybe thats why he's been getting these decision losses) and he uses some very effective kickboxing and his ground game is improving but not top notch and doesnt have a whole lot of BJJ to go with it. now with Alves we have a ball of fury, having fought GSP once and losing decidely and since then for a while seemed to be digressing, but has come on full force in recent fights and definitely shows some serious fire. he also have good stand up, but he throws haymakers and goes for the KO, but is very effective it and his ground and pound is brutal just because of how strong and nasty he is in the cage. both men are trying to solidify themselves at the top of the division and this being the main event this fight will be all out i expect.
Prediction: Alves wins by TKO stoppage
Demetrious Johnson vs Ian Mcall Flyweight
This fight my pick for the FOTN but it really is a toss up between this and the other flyweight fight. this is first anyone will see of the fylweight division in the ufc so these guys will come out guns a blzing without a doubt! last time we saw johnson he was on the losing end of a decision to the Bantamweight champ dominick cruz, who said that johnson was the fastest person he had ever fought by far and that is a very big endorsement. he has a very strong wrestling base and good ground and pound but his quickness makes him very effective on his feet and holds KO power in both hands. Mcall right now is ranked as the number 1 flyweight but that kind of doesnt mean anything because he's been the only fighting a 125 for some time(outside of the UFC albeit) he has very good hands and is extremely creative with him but doesnt necessarily have KO power, but says he was born to fight and loves fighting. he has wrestling in his background and is explosive in his takedowns but not the the extend that johnson does. both of these fighters are goin to bring it since this is for a place in the championship fight so it really could come down to who wants it more so this has been a hard one to call.
Prediction: Johnson via split decision
Joe Benavidez vs Yasuhiro Urushitani Flyweight
Another fight to look forward to! Benavidez is an awesome fighter with only two losses on record both to bantamweight champ Cruz who described him as a smaller version of Urijah Faber. He has constant movement and really has had no weakness accept being smaller than his opponents. He is quick on his feet and does have KO power and his takedown are extremely explosive with awesome ground and pound because he is so active. Urushitani is pretty unknown to me but is very good as well, being the current Shooto 123lbs champ. I didnt look in to him a whole because i just didnt see the point judging by his opponent, no offense though bro dont come at me.
Prediction: Benavidez via UD
Court Mcgee vs Costa Philippou
Mcgee is the TUF season 11 winner and has been progressing in each fight since and this a step in competition for him. he has adequate striking but doesnt have a lot of head movement or great footwork so that can get him in trouble but his wrestling is very good and he is very good with submissions off his back or on top. he has goes either 100% striking or 100% wrestling in the past which isnt always a good thing when you don't miz things up for your opponent.Philippou is a very good boxer with power and accuracy making this dangerous for Mcgee. he doesnt need much space to put off his power punches so thats very good when he's in the clinch or scrambling back to his feet. he is respectable on the ground, but he is definitely going to look to keep the fight standing. so he can uses his punches and knees.
Prediction: Philippou via TKO stoppage
There you have my predictions. i will also be live tweeting during the bouts to keep you posted on the action.
